Libya

This is just not a good month for the world, no?

Off the cuff, this is what is annoying me about the terrible situation in Libya:
  1. USAmericans worrying not about successfully saving the innocent civilians of Libya, who are already being sodomized by their ruler, but about how USAmerican forces are not "taking the lead."
  2. Again I ask, for the eleven millionth time, who died and made 'the West' god? When has an intervention resulted in anything good for anyone?
  3. When are we going to disband that most pointless of organizations, the United Nations? Keep the UNICEF etc, but please, stop pretending that they care about the general welfare and security of countries that are not Western Europe or the USA.
  4. Dithering! Why did they dither so much? Why not help when help was useful? Like when the rebels had control of most of the important bits of the country? Gaddafi has the oil now.
  5. The inability of all these people to decide on one single way to spell the man's name!!!!!! (this one most I think.)

  1. Am sharing it all over the place. I love this post. Simple no-nonsense questions but hits hard. Exactly what I had in mind the morning I saw the NYT.

  2. Agree wholeheartedly with 5. Not so sure about the rest.:
    1. It appears in the nature of people to be self-centered. In HK, while being all sympathetic about Japan, they are running around buying up salt to protect themselves, if you please.
    2. The UN: I'm most surprised they acted at all. And although i find their whole "resolutions" thing very pointless, I question the logic of ordering strikes or no-fly zone or whatever (not sure what the difference is actually, seems like simple bombing a country to me). I was very pleased with China for abstaining. If they intervened in Libya, then why not Bahrain, or Yemen or any of the others? Why wait for people to revolt... they could just go into Saudi Arabia right now? there's a repressive regime if there ever was one. The mind boggles.

  3. exactly!
in the case of 1, forgive but HK is not seen as "world leader". as for 2, yes yes yes! saudi arabia has more oil. and the US is very deeply tied up with them. see John Perkins, confessions of an economic hitman

  4. Hehe, true that about world leader but I think people being obsessed wtih their own interests and theirs only is a function of economic development. It seems like the more economically-developed, the more self-centered. Except maybe some European countries - I thinkk that's because they teach philosophy in school.
